Law Society’s ‘Wills for Charity’ raise $44,296.12 for the Society for the Aged Sick

The Law Society’s Law Awareness Committee’s inaugural ‘Wills for Charity’ project in 1999 raised $44,296.12 for the Society for the Aged Sick.

At a ceremony on Saturday, 22 January 2000, Mr Palakrishnan, President of the Law Society, presented a cheque to Mr Koh Kim Seng, President of the Society for the Aged Sick, at the Society for the Aged Sick’s new premises in Hougang.

It was due to the efforts of the Society’ s volunteer lawyers, Mr Palakrishnan declared, that the Society had surpassed its initial target of raising S$15,000.

From May to August 1999, some 300 volunteer lawyers drafted ‘simple wills’ and explained the process of making a will to over 1,200 laypersons at a nominal charge of $75 per will; other volunteers manned a hotline for the project.

Ms Roslina Baba, the Chairperson of the Law Awareness Committee 1999, said, ‘The project helped to educate members of the public on the advantages of having a properly drafted and executed will and raised money for a good cause, fulfilling its two-fold objective.’

‘We chose the Society for the Aged Sick as our beneficiary because it provides residential care for destitute and sick elders, ‘ explained Ms Baba.

The Society for the Aged Sick houses over 180 residents between the ages of 60 to 96 years. Eight qualified nurses, 14 nursing aides, 30 health attendants and 19 auxiliary staff attend to residents’ needs in a therapeutic environment. Its facilities include an intensive nursing ward, a physiotherapy room, a recreation/activity room, medical and dental rooms and a landscaped garden.

‘We provide basic rehabilitative care to the elderly to enable them to live healthier lifestyles and to improve their physical and mental well-being,’ said Ms Vijaya Sreenidhi, CEO of the Society for the Aged Sick.

Said Ms Sreenidhi, ‘The funds raised will be used to establish a day-care centre unit on our new premises which will cater for 30 to 50 sick elderly patients. We will also obtain new therapy equipment for our residents.’

The Society for the Aged Sick presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the Law Society to commend its fund-raising efforts.
