Mr Christopher Goh (R)

After our guests’ arrival, Council Members gave them a tour of the Society’s four-storey building, including the roof-top patio.

In his welcome speech, Mr. Palakrishnan, President, declared, ‘I share the vision of the Judiciary to improve the judicial system for all parties involved - the Bench, practitioners and laymen alike.’

Council Members and judges mingled easily; their laughter and conversation filling the Society’s conference room.

Upon their departure, each guest was presented with a miniature plaque and requested to leave their mark in the Society’s guestbook.

Senior District Judge, Mr Richard Magnus penned the following inscription: ‘I am inspired by the President’s vision of a confluence of the Judiciary and the Bar in enhancing access to justice and the Rule of Law.’

Millennium Cross-Country Run

The Law Society kicked off its sports programme for the new Millennium with the Law Society Shield Millennium Cross-Country Run on Sunday, 5 March 2000 at the MacRitchie Reservoir Park.

Winner - Wendy Yap (Ladies category),
Winner -  Michael Kor (Veteran Category),
Winner - Chiang Pak Chien (Junior Category)
and Mr Palakrishnan

The 3.2 km run attracted more than 150 registered participants (including several offshore lawyers), almost doubling last year’s attendance. The crowd was actually bigger as many participants came with family members. Amongst the law firms, Khattar Wong & Partners, led by Mr Abdul Rashid Ghani and his senior partners, Mr Rajan Menon and Mr Yang Lih Shyng, had the largest number of participants, namely 55.

The Law Society President, Mr Palakrishnan, flagged off the run, but not before helping to calm competitors’ nerves with his usual wit (eg ‘The run through the jungle is like litigation - you have to always look out for monkeys, iguanas, and watch out for buttress roots and other obstacles along the way’, ‘Are you sure none of you need a medical check-up?’, ‘Remember, your professional indemnity insurance doesn’t cover this event’, etc). The fine weather also helped to put everyone in good spirits for the run, which took runners through scenic parts of the MacRitchie Reservoir Park.

On the competitive front, it was a day of hat-tricks. For the third year running, the following achievements were recorded:

Mr Chiang Pak Chien, of Rajah & Tann, was fastest in the Men’s (Junior) category (below 35 years old).

Drew & Napier and Khattar Wong & Partners finished second and third in the Team Event respectively.

Mr George Lim, the Immediate Past President of the Law Society, as Guest-of-Honour, gave away the prizes.
