One hundred and sixty-three new lawyers were called to the Bar
at the recent Mass Call on 3 June 2000 at 10am.
A
total of three courtrooms were needed for the occasion: the Court of Appeal and
Courts Number 1 and 2, presided over by The Honourable the Chief Justice Yong
Pung How, Justice LP Thean and Justice Chao Hick Tin, Judges of Appeal,
respectively.
The
Chief Justice addressed the newly-admitted members of the Bar, reminding them to
‘uphold the sacred virtues of honesty, integrity and professionalism …’
and to truly and honestly conduct themselves in the practice of an Advocate and
Solicitor according to the best of their ‘knowledge and ability and according
to law’.
Congratulating
the parents of the new lawyers, he said, ‘Your parents are the ones who have
given you their unwavering support and guidance all these years. They are the
ones who have brought you up to become the fine young ladies and gentlemen that
we see before us. My deepest gratitude goes out to all your parents.’
One proud parent even enjoyed the honour of standing to move his
own daughter’s Call Mr Palakrishnan, President of the Law Society, had the
singular pleasure of presenting his daughter, Ms Shoba Charmaine Palakrishnan,
to be called before Justice Chao Hick Tin.
Other
practitioners were also present to see their children follow in their footsteps.
Ms Lim Yen Lan (Yen Lan & Co) watched her son, Mr Kevin David De Souza,
being called to the Bar.
Declared
Ms Lim, ‘This is a great moment for us as we have been looking forward to this
event for years.’
Yet
another proud practitioner parent attending the Call was Mrs Yong Whee Choo,
senior partner in M/s Rodyk and Davidson, whose daughter Ms Clarissa Yong Siu Li
was also called to the Bar.
The
formalities were followed by a reception held by the Law Society at the
Singapore Academy of Law restaurant for the newly called lawyers, their family
and friends.
| Present at the reception was the Chief Justice, as well as a number of judges and judicial commissioners, who welcomed the new lawyers into the legal profession. The Chief Justice, in particular, was approached by many proud parents who wished to be photographed with him. | ![]() |

Sadly however, the new lawyers were unable to continue the proud tradition of having their group photograph taken on the City Hall steps because the enthusiastic planners of the National Day Parade were already in the process of setting up the parade grandstand along the steps.

‘Knowles Cup’, ‘Wee Chong Jin Cup’ & ‘Cc Tan Cup’
Forty-eight
members participated in the Annual Bench & Bar Games held at the
Raffles Country Club on Friday, 9 June 2000. Under slightly overcast
skies, golfers manoeuvred through tight fairways and slick greens of the
Lake Course in their bid for three Cups, namely, the Knowles Cup, the
Wee Chong Jin Cup and the CC Tan Cup. It was an enjoyable afternoon with some coming into the clubhouse with surprisingly low nett scores. Whilst no golfer managed a hole-in-one that day, Bernard Liu came close at the 146 metre 8th hole, where he managed to put his ball 4 1 /2 feet to the pin. A buffet spread was served at the Shanshui Palace Restaurant after the tournament, followed by the presentation of prizes and trophies.
