A ‘Happy New Year’ to all our readers! Welcome to the
first issue of The Singapore Law Gazette
in 2001. A new year, a new issue and a new theme in our ‘Focus’ section:
‘Employment Law’. We open with an article which gives us an insight into the
operation of covenants in restraint of trade in employment contracts, followed
by an article explaining the legal issues involved in the implementation of
employee share option schemes by employers in Singapore. The next article
examines the issue of termination of employment where the regulations under the
Employment Act are not applicable. The Employment Law theme is concluded with
two brief but interesting and heartening articles which look at two law firms in
Singapore which place great value on family life and, hence, the welfare and
happiness of their employees.
As a ‘Feature’ this month, we present the Keynote
Address delivered by Professor S Jayakumar, Minister for Law and Foreign
Affairs, on 1 November 2000 at the Opening of the 4th LAWASIA Business Law
Conference 2000.
With regard to the readers’ survey conducted last year, the results of the survey from those who responded constitute valuable feedback from our readers and we would like to thank those who took the effort to return the survey form. The responses will provide us with some measure of guidance along the path of improvement. As Mr Palakrishnan, President of the Law Society, says, ‘The results encourage us to do just that much more.’
