Tipping the Scales of Justice

Talk about specialisation. The Obesity Law and Advocacy Centre in San Diego is the initiative of a lawyer who used to weigh a hefty 400 pounds. A one-stop shop, it is devoted almost entirely to serving the legal needs of the obese, encompassing employment law, discrimination law, health insurance. Gives a whole new dimension to the notion of a boutique practice, doesn't it?

Of Soup and shark

With all the soup-for-the-soul books springing up, the latest brainwave of none other than our Law Society's CEO is for the same to be done for lawyers. And the title of this concoction? Why Sharksfin Soup for the Lawyers' Soul, of course! We are not sure if the close proximity of a sharksfin retailer to the Law Society premises has anything to do with this idea, but we are sure it'll be a scream, if not a hit, amongst our brethren. Of cannibalism, maybe?

Golden Rules

Seen on the wall of a successful law practice, three golden rules for lawyers:

Rule Number One: Get the money up front
Rule Number Two: Make no promises
Rule Number three: Get the money up front

Lear's Macaws Have Flown the Coop
- on Business Class, no less!

- Call it a coincidence, but soon after making their appearance in the President's Message for our Environmental Law issue (see SLG March 2001 issue), the Lear's Macaws hit the local news (see Straits Times, 21 March 2001), where it was reported that these rare birds were to be repatriated to their country of origin, Brazil - on a Business Class ticket - on our national carrier. Talk about leaving in style - on a wing and a prayer - not to mention a great way to fly!
