The theme for this June issue of The Singapore Law Gazette is 'Legal Practice Management'. We begin with an article on knowledge management. Technical legal knowledge is insufficient - what clients want from their lawyers is the sum of their practical, relevant, and applied know-how. Lawyers may need to consider the relevant bargaining positions, expectations and objectives of the parties while providing legal advice. Our next article provides a viable solution for small firms and sole practitioners, with limited resources and finances, to remain administratively and technologically competitive with larger firms. Significant changes are occurring within the legal practice and the inability to use internet-based technologies throughout the law firm is a failing which will have an adverse impact on the delivery of legal services to corporate clients. The third article in our 'Focus' section highlights these changes that are occurring within the legal industry and sets out some of the challenges for law firms and corporate legal departments. The last article takes a look at the controversial issue of legal e-commerce - the selling of legal services over the World Wide Web - also known as the 'commoditisation' of legal services; an idea still not wholly desirable nor accepted by all in the legal community.

For our 'Features' section, we are introduced to a new legal form for businesses in the UK - the Limited Liability Partnerships. It is a form of business midway between a partnership and a limited company. Perhaps a worldwide trend for businesses of the future?

Also featured is an article by The Honourable Judicial Commissioner Chan Seng Onn (as he then was) on the role and duties of State-assigned counsel, in which His Honour offers some tips on cross-examination, re-affirms the need for justice, fairness and consideration of public interest in the discharge of one's duties and highlights the 'dos' and 'don'ts' of conduct at trial.
