New Year's New News Look

After years of being the safe and rather obvious Fax Bulletin ('FB'), the Law Society is proud to announce the new 'Jus News' in place of the former FB.

Members will be pleased to note that plans are also in the pipeline for this bulletin to be made available electronically not just through facsimile transmission to managing partners of your firms, but to each individual member who provides his/her e-mail address to the Law Society. This database will be put in place by mid-2002 and a call for this information will be coming to you soon. So do respond and you will be notified with an individual e-mail and a hyperlink to the Law Society website each time the new Jus News is up on site.

Bonding with the Office

Obiter thought it would catch up with the Law Society's new CEO, Ms Yashodhara Dhoraisingam, who takes office from January 2002, by asking her what was on her bedside-reading table. Members who will remember Yasho, as she is more popularly known, as one of our long-serving secretariat staff, may be thrilled to know that it is none other than
W Somerset Maughm's Of Human Bondage!

Do Your (O)Bit(er)

Beginning this year, Obiter invites contributions from our readers of bits of juicy, out-of-court statements that have tickled your funny bone. No lawyer jokes, please, but we do invite true-life encounters against a legal backdrop.

While we reserve the right to edit all contributions, we want to acknowledge our contributors - so do include your name, designation and firm name/organisation. All contributions should be no more than 150 words and may be e-mailed to publications@lawsoc.org.sg. Photographs or graphics are also welcome.

Going Global

In the spirit of catching up with the head-honchos at the Law Society of Singapore, Obiter approached none other than our President - whose theme for his Opening of Legal Year Speech (see 'President's Message') is for local lawyers not only to go forth into the region, but bring the region to us and aim to create a vibrant and economically lucrative legal hub within Singapore - for a quote. 'The World is not E-nough!' was Mr Palakrishnan, SC's punchline.

The President obviously has a different kind of 'Bond(ing)' in mind!
