One Woman, Two Loves | A Legend on the Bay
A ballet about dance and tormented love.
The Singapore Dance Theatre’s The Red Shoes at the Esplanade this December weaves a poignant tale of dedication to dance and fulfilment of love.
The Red Shoes is adapted by Australian choreographer Petal Miller-Ashmole from the 1948 Oscar-winning movie of the same name.
In the original story of the film, Victoria Page is an aspiring dancer who joins Boris Lermontov’s company where
she is given an opportunity to be a star in the company’s staging of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, The Red Shoes. However she is also in love with budding composer Julian Craster. Tragedy strikes when she has to choose
between Craster and the domineering Lermontov who demands total dedication from his dancers.
Torn between the man she loves and her desire to dance, she has to make a choice: her promising career and fulfilment of love.
Said Ms Goh Soo Khim, artistic director of Singapore Dance Theatre, on the choice of The Red Shoes, ‘The ballet is about dance and it addresses many issues dancers face in
their daily lives. It is a story that never fails to be relevant to both professionals and the audience’.
