Annual General Meeting (‘AGM’)
Council discussed the preparations for the AGM and was advised that Mr Gan Hiang Chye, Chairperson of the Conveyancing Practice Committee, would present an oral report on the status of the work of the Solicitors Real Estate Scheme
Committee.
Law Society’s Council Elections 2002
Council noted that there would be elections only in the Junior category on 31 October 2002, with seven candidates contesting two seats. Council of 2003 would have to co-opt two members to serve in the Senior category and one in
the Middle category.
End of Year ‘Thank You’ Reception for Law Society Committee Members
Council was advised that a ‘thank you’ reception would be held in mid-December 2002. A budget was approved for the event. Council members, Ms Malathi Das and Ms Helen Chia, were tasked to organise the event with the Law Society’s
secretariat.
Young Lawyers Committee’s Project: Generation X
Council approved a budget for the project planned by the Young Lawyers Committee that would continue till 2003.
Project: Generation X comprises four dinner talks of a motivational nature to be given by senior members of the Bar. Each young lawyer who attends the dinner would be presented with a souvenir publication. This publication
would include reports on issues of concern to a young member of the Bar and motivational quotes from senior members of the Bar and Bar leaders from abroad and our own.
The first dinner talk was scheduled for 28 November 2002.
Report on Attendance at the 13th Presidents of Law Associations in Asia (‘POLA’) Meeting
Council discussed the CEO’s report on the Law Society’s attendance of this annual meeting.
Council was advised that the South Korean Bar Association was keen to open its legal services and had issued an invitation for a member of the Law Society to attend a meeting to discuss the initiatives in Singapore. The Korean
Bar Association would sponsor this visit. Council decided that Mr Philip Jeyaretnam would attend the meeting and represent the Law Society.
Joint Seminar with Malaysia’s Bar Council on ‘Intellectual Property Litigation in the 21st Century in Singapore and Malaysia’
This joint seminar, conducted on 18 October 2002 in Singapore, was a success. Mrs Murgiana Haq, Council member, informed Council that the Intellectual Property Committee would put up a report on the seminar.
Indiana University Scholarship for a Young Lawyer
Council agreed to study a scholarship initiative of the Indiana University for a Masters Degree in law for a young lawyer below the age of 35 years. The Young Lawyers Committee was tasked to look into the matter and make a
recommendation, if the Law Society ought to support this scholarship initiative.
Asean Law Association’s (‘ALA’) General Assembly to be Held in Singapore in 2003
The Law Society agreed to support and publicise this event. Council referred the matter to the International Relations Committee for the necessary follow up.
