With the demands of today's modern society, spouses and parents are finding it a challenge to balance the pressures of work and the responsibilities of family life. Recognising this, the Ministry of Community Development and Sports ('MCDS'), in October 2000, launched a special partnership with the community - the Family Life Ambassador ('FLA') Programme. The FLA Programme advocates the forging of partnerships with the community to address the issue of building strong and stable families through the promotion of family-life education programmes, such as marriage preparation, marriage enrichment, financial management and effective communication. It aims to inculcate positive family values within members of the community and to equip them with the necessary skills that will empower each one to manage family life issues.
The FLAs have a special role to play in this scheme of things. FLAs comprise businesses, organisations and individuals from all sectors who pledge their commitment to participate in the FLA Programme to bring the family life message to the people they work, live and interact with. The FLAs participate in several ways:
The Law Society of Singapore is proud to announce that in March this year, we signed up to be a Family Life Ambassador. The Society hopes to work closely with the MCDS to bring the message of family wellness to members and staff of the Society. For starters, we hope to inculcate awareness and spread the message that family life skills can be learnt and that there are resources available for persons who desire to know more. To that end, the Society will be making available pamphlets and brochures on family life skills at its reception. In the pipeline also will be structured events and activities. So if you are interested in enriching your family life or wish to encourage your co-workers to do so, keep a look out for the Law Society's FLA programmes.
