Introducing
…On 1 July 2002, the Law Society Secretariat welcomed its newest staff member, Mr Jimmy Khoo, Director of Corporate Communications. It was a wet and windy Monday when Jimmy reported for work, but that didn't dampen his high spirits. Jimmy was raring to go, full of enthusiasm for the job. Barely having settled in, he has thrown himself into his work, but the Singapore Law Gazette managed to catch him for that traditional rite of passage, THE INTERVIEW.
Q: Tell us about yourself.
A: I'm 35 years old, married with two daughters aged six and eight years, with a
third coming in September. I am an 'outdoor' type of person and teach scuba
diving as well.
Q: Why did you decide to join the Law Society?
A: Since getting my law degree via part time studies in 1997, I have effectively
used my knowledge of the law in my previous job. But when the opportunity came
to join the Law Society, it could not have been more perfect for me, as it means
that I can apply what I've learnt even more appropriately to my new environment.
I've always had a passion for law, so I guess that explains it all.
Q: What does your job here entail?
A: This job is essentially one of telling the public who we (the Law Society)
are and what our functions are. Beyond that, of course, I have to correspond
with the public on matters that concern the Law Society. I also work with the
Law Society's Committees to foster better relations with other foreign law
societies and associations. Welfare is a big part of this job, as we look out
for our members and act in their interests.
Q: What challenges do you see ahead for yourself and how would you meet
them?
A: I see many challenges ahead. To begin with, I will have to at least try
to emulate my predecessor in the good work that she has done. And with the help
of my colleagues, I hope to further the work of the Corporate Communications
department and strive to do better for all of us here at the Law Society.
Q: What do you do for rest and relaxation?
A: I enjoy swimming, scuba diving, reading and watching movies. But I
tremendously enjoy spending time with my family most of all.
