Revelling in victory! And why not ...
|
|
Proud and most pleased with the Law Society’s performance at this year’s Bench & Bar Games in Sabah, our President, Mr Palakrishnan, SC, took time off his busy schedule to say a big ‘THANK YOU’ to the Sports Committee and its sports convenors, by treating everyone to an evening of wining and dining at the Butterbean restaurant on Purvis Street on Friday, 14 June 2002. |

Our corporate sponsors and special guests from UBS Private Banking were also present to enjoy the sumptuous feast prepared by Genevieve and the chefs at Butterbean.
This was an opportunity for some of the members to re-visit their memories of Sabah. It was truly an enjoyable night, with lots of good cheer and laughter in the air. The Bench & Bar Games not only resulted in a clear win for the Law Society, but on a personal note, it was also a victory in terms of the togetherness and friendships that were forged amongst our members. |

On 13 July 2002, the Law Society hosted a meeting at our premises for delegates participating in the Singapore Co-operation Programme (‘SCP’). These delegates comprised judges and legal officers from our Asian neighbours,
namely, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Brunei, Vietnam and Indonesia. On hand to bid them a warm welcome were Council members and members from the Family Law Practice Committee.
The theme for this year’s programme was ‘The Family Justice System: Building a Lasting Legacy of Protecting Family Obligations’. Mr Yap Teong Liang, Vice-Chairman of the Family Law Practice Committee, gave an informative
overall perspective on ‘Family Justice in Singapore’.
Questions were then taken from the floor and further information was sought by the delegates not only on family law and procedures, but other aspects such as the administration of justice, the structure of our judicial system,
procedures and training requirements in order to be called to the Singapore Bar.
The delegates also expressed surprise at how young our judicial officers of the Family Court were. There was also a lively and candid exchange of information amongst the delegates themselves. Entertaining and witty repartee
between hosts and delegates and between delegates themselves was heard to much merriment and laughter all round.
At the close of the question and answer session, the President, Mr Palakrishnan, SC, presented each delegate with a gift from the Law Society. The delegates were also invited to sign the Law Society Guest Book. The President
then led the delegates on a guided tour of our premises, culminating in a photography session on the rooftop. The delegates were impressed by the view afforded from the rooftop, and the premises as a whole.
The visit ended with a sumptuous lunch at our Relex Lounge. The comfortable and friendly ambience provided the delegates with the opportunity to mingle with the Council members and amongst themselves. The feedback from the
judges and delegates on their visit was very positive, and the Law Society was informed that one delegate even said that of all the visits she had attended during the SCP, she enjoyed the visit to the Law Society the most!

On 1 August 2002, the Law Society and UBS Private Banking, a division of UBS AG, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (‘MOU’). UBS AG is one of the world’s leading financial firms, serving a discerning global client base. Its private banking division is the world’s leading provider of private banking services. A long heritage of integrity,
discretion and client service excellence results in UBS managing more private wealth than any other bank in the world. The Council of the Law Society sees this collaboration with UBS as the beginning of a new era in how the Society reaches out to serve members. By this collaboration, we hope to deliver information to members in areas of finance and personal wealth management with the support of the world’s leading private bankers. Under the MOU signed, UBS will jointly organise with our Continuing Legal Education Committee, seminars/conferences/lectures for members, and provide a two-page financial editorial in the Singapore Law Gazette, starting
with this month’s issue. UBS will also sponsor the Law Society’s annual Dinner and Dance, our premier social event. |
