Proposed Guidance Note on Fees for Conveyancing Work After the Abolition of Scale Fees
Council agreed that a dialogue session with members be held in January 2003 to discuss proposals for a voluntary scale for conveyancing services by our practitioners.

Guidelines for the Appointment of Assigned Counsel in Capital Cases
The Council finalised guidelines on the above for submission to the Registrar following feedback from his Honour on the first draft of the Law Society. The views of the Criminal Practice and Ethics Committees were considered. The revised draft was forwarded to the Registrar of the Supreme Court.

Support for Indiana University LLM Scholarship
Mr Montague Choy informed the Council that the Young Lawyers Committee would support the LLM Scholarship offered by Indiana University. The value of the scholarship is US$10,000. Partial scholarships of US$5,000 will be given to successful applicants based on merit and need. The availability of the scholarship would be publicised to members via the weekly e Jus News and the Singapore Law Gazette. Council agreed to accept the offer of the scholarships.

Date and Venue of the Law Society’s 2003 Dinner and Dance
Council agreed that next year’s dinner and dance will be held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel on 18 October 2003.

Registrar’s Circular No 5 of 2002 — Revision of Hearing Fees and Filing Fees in the Supreme Court
Council decided that a letter be sent to the Registrar of the Supreme Court as soon as possible to request the reasons for the increase in hearing fees and filing fees.

Status Report on the Preparation of the Law Society’s Revised Guidance Note on Money Laundering
Mr Suresh Damodara informed the Council that he would discuss with the Criminal Practice Committee proposed revisions to the draft in the light of recent legislative changes.

Final Quarterly Report of the CEO on the Law Society’s Workplan
Ms Yasho Dhoraisingam presented to Council the final Workplan review report and advised that pending items in the Workplan would be carried forward to 2003 with revised deadlines.

‘Thank You’ Dinner for Committees
Ms Malathi Das informed Council that the ‘Thank You’ Dinner to express the Law Society’s appreciation for all committee chairpersons and committee members and out-going Council members would be held on 10 December 2002 at the SAFRA Town Club.

Applications for Grants from the Law Society’s Welfare Fund
Council accepted the Social and Welfare Committee’s recommendation to grant a sum of S$8,000 and S$3,000 respectively to two applicants, who were the wives of former members. A third application was pending as further particulars have been requested by the Committee.
