Delinking of Practising Certificates
Council studied the proposals from the insurers for Professional Indemnity cover for locum lawyers. Council requested the CEO to check certain conditions and revert to Council at the next meeting.
Lexcel Standards Knowledge Buy-Out
The CEO advised Council that to mark the signing of the agreement with the Law Society of England and Wales, a ceremony will be held in Singapore in December 2003 during the visit of the President of the Law Society of England and
Wales.
However, both Law Societies have begun to work on implementation of the terms of the agreement in August.
The Work of the Electronic Litigation Committee
Mr Andrew Chan (Chairman), Mr Martin Marini and Mr Rama Tiwari (members of the Committee) appeared before Council.
Council was advised that the Committee was working with non-EFS law practices to seek feedback on their concerns on EFS and the Committee had helped both the Family Law and Criminal Law Practice Committee representatives in
their feedback on the EFS system for both areas of practice.
Council planned to have a dialogue with members once the EFS Review Committee report was published for the public.
The Law Society’s First Family Day
The Social and Welfare Committee reported that 253 people had signed up for the event that took place on 2 August 2003 at Memphari Beach on Sentosa Island.
Providing Access to Articles in the Singapore Law Gazette on LawNet
The Singapore Academy of Law had approached the Law Society for permission to post articles from the Singapore Law Gazette on LawNet’s Legal Work Bench to provide a wider and more comprehensive research base for practitioners.
Council had no objections to this request.
Appointment of Law Society of Singapore’s Councillor for Law Asia
Council nominated Ms Malathi Das as the Society’s Councillor and she would attend the meeting of Country Councillors in Tokyo in September.
Certificates of Appreciation
The Council adopted all the names proposed by Law Society Committees chairs for Certificates of Appreciation for members who have served on committees. The certificates would be presented during the annual dinner and dance
which would be held on 18 October 2003 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.
