Yu Han Wen — Bar Memorial Scholarship Holder

The Law Society this year awarded the Bar Memorial Scholarship to Yu Han Wen, who has just started law classes in the hallowed halls of the Law Faculty of the National University of Singapore. His hours at university are long, but the SLG managed to catch him for a quick chat on university life and what winning the scholarship means to this earnest young man.

  1. I understand you have started classes at the Law Faculty. What is it like?

Very interesting. Law being a blend of practicality and philosophy is highly thought provoking. I enjoy classes as they are discussion-centred and focus on applying existing law to different facts and situations, which is a welcome respite from junior college which involved regurgitation of facts.

  1. Have you developed a love for any particular subject? Or a particular dislike?

Neither. We’re still dealing with the fundamentals of law. It’s still too early to form a like or dislike.

  1. Have you any idea which area of law you would like to specialise in eventually?

Intellectual property law perhaps.

  1. How did you hear about the Bar Memorial Scholarship Fund?

Through the Law Society website.

  1. What does it mean to you to be a recipient of the Bar Memorial Scholarship?

The Bar Memorial Scholarship is an incentive and as a recipient of it, I’m honoured and encouraged to work even harder in law school.

  1. Does getting this scholarship put any additional pressure on you?

No. The scholarship is an encouragement, not a burden, besides, most of the pressure comes from law school itself.

  1. Could you share your vision of what you think an ideal practising lawyer ought to be like?

Someone who enjoys helping others voice their story and protect their legal rights in the belief that justice is giving every man his due.

Spoken like a true blue lawyer in the making! We wish Han Wen every success as he embarks on this exciting phase of his life.
