Status Report on the Work of the Committee Appointed to Review Changes to the Solicitors’ Accounts Rules
Council was advised that the Committee would finalise its report and submit the same to Council by the end of January 2004.

De-linked Practising Certificates (‘PC’)
Council deliberated on the terms of the final report to be sent to the Honourable Attorney-General on the Society’s de-linked PC proposal that would enable lawyers to apply for and obtain a PC to practise as locums in law practices. Council accepted the report subject to minor amendments which was forwarded to the Attorney-General. Launch of PrimeLaw — the Law Society’s Voluntary Practice Management Excellence Standard Council approved the final revised logo for PrimeLaw, the Law Society’s voluntary practice management excellence standard. Council was also briefed on the programme for the launch of the standard on 11 December 2003. It was agreed that in an upcoming issue of The Singapore Law Gazette in 2004, PrimeLaw should be featured as a cover story for members’ information.

Workplan of the Law Society for 2004
Council approved the terms of the workplan of the Society for 2004. A briefing on the workplan would be held for all chairs and members of committees on 31 January 2004.

Council also deliberated on the terms of the speeches made at the Opening of Legal Year. Council was advised that the Subordinate Courts had agreed to invite the Society to participate in the latter’s workplan discussions.

Council then nominated Mr Peter Low to chair an ad hoc Committee comprising Ms Malathi Das and Mr Michael Chia to provide the Society’s feedback to the Subordinate Courts workplan committee.

Dialogue Sessions with Members
Council agreed to hold various dialogue sessions with members. The dialogue sessions, to be held until March 2004, would be with sole solicitors, medium sized law practices, large law practices and the senior counsel caucus.

Adoption of the Law Society’s Calendar of Events for 2004
Council agreed with the suggested dates for main events for the Society. The calendar would be publicised via the weekly Ejus News and The Singapore Law Gazette for members’ information.

Nominees to Serve on the Senate for the Singapore Academy of Law in 2004
Council nominated Vice Presidents, Mr George Tan and Mr Leo Cheng Suan, as nominees to serve in the Senate of the Singapore Academy of Law in 2004. Mr Philip Jeyaretnam, SC launches the Law Society Practice Management Excellence Standard — PrimeLaw
