19 July
2005

Lim Teck Hui was born and grew up in Telok Ayer, Singapore.
After completing his secondary education at Victoria School, he read law at the then University of Singapore and graduated with a Bachelor of Law (Honours) degree and subsequently obtained a Post Graduate Business Law Diploma degree.
Teck Hui was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in January 1967. He read in Chambers at Boswell, Hsieh and Lim and subsequently joined the legal firm of Laycock & Ong at Market Street.
He later started his own sole proprietorship under the name of Lim Teck Hui & Co.
Gregarious by nature, friendly and affable in disposition, and cheerful and kind in personality, Teck Hui built up a successful practice in conveyancing, criminal and general litigation.
In addition to English, Teck Hui was fluent in several Chinese dialects, including Mandarin. This greatly assisted him in the development of his practice. In 1984, he merged his practice to join Jing Quee, Chin Joo & Teck Hui. After leaving the partnership firm in 1994, he practised under his firm’s name of Lim Teck Hui & Partners as the sole senior partner till 1999. In August 1999 he became a legal consultant, first at Harry Elias Partnership, and subsequently at Chor Pee & Partners in 2001.
Teck Hui served in various capacities in many community organisations and school boards, such as Director of Ju Eng Home for Senior Citizens and Independent Director of Hup Seng Huat Group of Companies.
He was, for many years, Chairman of the Criminal Law Review Board.
He was also appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 1986 and inspected prisons as Visiting Justice and solemnised marriages for couples outside the Registry of Marriages on request.
Teck Hui was awarded the Public Service Medal (PBM) in 1986 for his services to the community. He was also awarded the Long Service Award for dedicated voluntary service from the Ministry of Home Affairs in 1999 and 2004.
A devout Christian, Teck Hui was active in the church. He was a doting father and had a strong rapport with his children, often travelling with them as time permitted, with increasing regularity.
Teck Hui
passed away in the early hours of 19 July 2005,
at the age of 65, from sudden cardiac failure, leaving behind his wife Irene,
