A Night in Shanghai
The Society held its annual Dinner and Dance on 4 November 2006 at the Raffles City Convention Centre. We were honoured to have as guest of honour, the President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr S R Nathan and Mrs Nathan. Gracing the occasion also were Professor S Jayakumar and Mrs Jayakumar; the Honourable the Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong and Mrs Chan; Attorney-General Chao Hick Tin and Mrs Chao; the Honourable Judge of Appeal, Justice Andrew Phang and Mrs Phang; the Honourable Solicitors-General, Mr Chan Seng Onn and Professor Walter Woon, as well as Judges and Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court. Many members and guests were gamely attired in Chinese costumes, in keeping with the ‘A Night in Shanghai’ theme. The night’s entertainment included the traditional Chinese art of mask changing and a martial arts performance by a Shaolin troupe.
Following speeches by President Nathan and Law Society President Mr Philip Jeyaretnam, SC, both of which are reproduced in this issue of the Gazette, Plaques of Appreciation and Friends of the Law Society Awards were presented respectively to several Law Society members and non-members for their significant contributions to the Society. The C C Tan Award was presented this year to Mr Giam Chin Toon, SC. A special surprise tribute was also paid to the CEO of the Society, Ms Yasho Dhoraisingam.
