Knowles Cup, Wee Chong Jin Cup and CC Tan Cup

Forty-three lawyers, armed not with their files and authorities but their drivers, irons and putters, marched into the Palm Course of the Raffles Country Club (‘RCC’) on 29 March 2006 on a hot tropical mid-week afternoon to take part in the annual golf competition organised by the Law Society. After a light lunch and ample liquid to meet the blazing afternoon heat, 11 flights of golfers teed off from both the first and 10th tee of the Palm Course in seven-minute intervals.

Living up to Singapore’s reputation as the lightning capital of the world, this year’s competition was halted at 3pm by a spectacular display of lightning, giving our players ample opportunity to discuss the legal rights if the game was to be suspended – over jugs of beer, of course. RCC informed us that if the rain continued till 4.30pm, a full refund was in store. The game resumed at 4.15pm!

The cooler aftermath and excellent drainage at RCC saw players enjoying the rest of the afternoon without interruption except that the final flight was unable to complete the 18th hole due to darkness. Gurdip Singh, playing off handicap 19 with a net score of 69, retained this year’s Knowles Cup while Chan Lai Foong, playing off 24 handicap managed 37 stableford points on count back to clinch the CC Tan Cup. It was sweet victory for Lai Foong as she missed the opportunity last year with the same stableford points on count back. The evening, however, belonged to Choo Wei-Pin who eagled the par-five seventh, carding seven pars and two birdies and with a handicap of four played 79 for a gross score, clinched the Wee Chong Jin Cup.

Players were also treated to goodies from our sponsors, Sport Network Pte Ltd, which donated Lynx Caps, markers and tees as door gifts. A Rohim and Gurdip Singh both walked away with an Akira Driver and Fairway Wood for blasting their balls within inches of the hole for the nearest to pin holes. Choo Wei-Pin picked up a Pitching Wedge for his longest drive at 18. All prizes were kindly donated by Sport Network Pte Ltd.

The evening ended with a sumptuous buffet dinner at the Shansui Palace where SK Yeo was introduced as the new Golf Convenor by Joseph Liow, the outgoing Golf Convenor and the new Sports Convenor. Any competitiveness prevalent on the golf course was slowly but surely diluted by the jugs of beers and comradeship. It was more than golf – it was sharing a passion for a sport with our fellow brethren in the Bar which made the event something to look forward to.
