NEWS Council Elections 2006 |
About 700 members in the middle category turned up at the Law Society on 27 October 2006 to cast their ballots. The two members elected into Council for the period 2007–2008 were Mr Rajan Chettiar and Mr Michael S Chia. Members in the senior and junior categories were not required to vote as Mr Wong Siew Hong and Ms Malathi Das were deemed elected in the senior category, and Mr Lee Terk Yang was deemed elected in the junior category, under s 53(3) of the Legal Profession Act.
The office bearers for Council of 2007 are: Mr Philip Jeyaretnam, SC (President); Mr Michael Hwang, SC (Vice-President); Ms Malathi Das (Vice-President); and Mr Michael S Chia (Treasurer).
The other members of Council comprise Mr Gan Hiang Chye, Mr Jimmy Yim, SC, Mr Wong Siew Hong, Mr Alvin Yeo, SC, Mr Francis Xavier, Mr Leo Cheng Suan, Mr Andrew Ong, Mr Yap Teong Liang, Mr Thio Shen Yi, Mr Pradeep Kumar Gobind, Mr Chia Boon Teck, Mr Rajan Chettiar, Ms Lisa Sam, Mr Anand Nalachandran, Mr Lee Terk Yang, Mr Wong Tsung Wei and Ms Laura Liew.
Changes have also taken place at the secretariat with effect from January 2007. Ms Chua Lik Teng takes over as Chief Executive Officer (‘CEO’) following the resignation of Ms Yasho Dhoraisingam. This month’s issue of the Gazette carries an interview with our new CEO (see page 42).
