Question: State the two types of complaints that can be brought against a lawyer to the Council of the Law Society.

While some were on the verge of answering: ‘Frivolous and Vexatious’, the correct answer was ‘Professional Misconduct and Inadequate Professional Services’ – thankfully, all the teams got this right.

It was certainly an evening of fun and trivia. The inaugural Law Society Inter-Firm Quiz Night held on 6 October 2006 was organised by the Social and Welfare Committee. The event received enthusiastic response from members, and close to 150 of us packed into the Snug Bar & Lounge at The Penny Black at Boat Quay to take part or to cheer and support the 10 participating law practices.

Question: Who was eventually awarded the status of ‘Top Gun’ in the movie Top Gun?

If you answered ‘Tom Cruise’, then you are wrong. Top Gun was eventually awarded to Val Kilmer (codename ‘Iceman’).

The team from Yeo-Leong & Peh led at the halfway stage, but could not sustain their momentum. Eventually, the team from Clifford Law Corporation came in third, and the team from Harry Elias Partnership took second place.

The team from Tan Kok Quan Partnership emerged champions and walked away (literally) with a bottle of champagne as the top prize (kindly sponsored by The Penny Black). Word has it that the bottle of champagne is still unopened and is currently kept hidden by one of TKQP’s lawyers.

Question: How many teams are there in the English Premiere League, the Italian Serie A and the Spanish Primera Liga respectively?

Some controversy surrounded the answers to this question, but the answer was certainly ‘20, 20, 20’.

The teams from Shook Lin & Bok, WongPartnership, TSMP Law Corporation, as well as the other teams, walked away sore, but were certainly determined to return better prepared and with a stronger line-up for the next Quiz Night.

TKQP, as the defending champions will be automatically invited to defend the Quiz Night Champion’s Mug (word has it again that the Champion’s Mug is actually on display at their office reception area!).

The Social and Welfare Committee would like to thank all participating teams and supporters for the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response. We look forward to seeing everyone again at the next Quiz Night.
