Law Society Quiz Nite 2007
The first Law Society Inter-Firm Quiz Nite of the year was a resounding success. Held at The Penny Black on 26 January 2007, the evening saw nine law practices in a fierce battle of wits amidst rounds of great drinks, pub grub and much fun and laughter.
The questions ran the gamut from entertainment, legal to sports. While some questions were straightforward, others were more complicated. Snug upstairs in the Bar and Lounge of The Penny Black with the pitter-patter of the rain outside, the various teams huddled together and debated their answers in fierce whispers.
Stumped at times, some attempted to solicit answers from friends via sms, while others tried to ply the quizmaster (who held the answers) with drinks, all to little avail. Here are some of the more hilarious answers from the participating firms:
To the question ‘Which Indian sportsman is nicknamed “Little Master”’, one team wrote ‘Kumar’, while another wrote ‘K Shanmugam’.
To the question ‘Name the three founders of YouTube’, one team answered ’the Chinese guy and the Ang Moh guy’.
To the question ‘In the Rules of Court, what is the Form number of the Writ of Summons’, all the numbers from three to seven were named! To their credit, the team from Hin Tat Augustine & Partners gave the one and only correct answer. If you are wondering, the correct answer is Form 2.
Thankfully, all the teams knew that the largest bone in the human body is the femur and that the Vatican City is widely recognised as the smallest country in the world. Phew!
It was a nail-biting race to the finish. When the scores were tallied up eventually, the results revealed a tie between the team from Shook Lin & Bok and the combined team of Straits Law Practice LLC and Joyce A Tan & Partners for third place. It was a tense moment when both teams each sent a representative to answer the tie-breaker. The suspense was soon broken, however, by peals of laughter when both representatives revealed amusing and inaccurate answers to the question ‘What is the full name of the current CEO of the Law Society of Singapore’. One answered ‘Philip Jeyaretnam’ and the other, ‘Yasho’ – both amazingly wrong. For the benefit of those who do not know, the correct answer is ‘Chua Lik Teng’.
The second tie-breaker saw the combined team of Straits Law Practice LLC and Joyce A Tan & Partners taking third place while Shook Lin & Bok had to be content with fourth placing. The Defending Champion, Tan Kok Quan Partnership put up a good fight, but lost their Champion’s Mug and had to settle for second placing. The clear winner (who retains the Champion’s Mug until the next Quiz Nite) was Allen & Gledhill with a score of 47 points. It was a quite hilarious when it was announced that the total possible score was actually 100.
While the top three teams were amply rewarded with bottles of champagne and wine, kindly sponsored by The Penny Black, it did not matter to the teams from Yeo-Leong & Peh LLC, TSMP Law Corporation, Drew & Napier LLC, Rodyk & Davidson, Shook Lin & Bok and Hin Tat Augustine & Partners which went home empty-handed. For it was clear from the beginning that Quiz Nite belonged to the legal fraternity where old friends caught up with one another and new friends were made.
The Social and Welfare Committee would like to thank all participating teams and supporters for their enthusiasm and sporting spirit. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and hope you did too! We hope to see all participants again (and new faces too) at the next Quiz Nite, which will be a special Bench & Bar Games edition.
