Question:
'What is the first event of every Bench & Bar Games?'
Query from the floor: 'Can we have further and better particulars on what you
mean by "first event" of the Games?'
Reply from the Quiz Master: 'Don't be a lawyer, just answer the question as
it is!'
Some answers: 'Darts', 'Hockey', 'Netball' etc
Correct answer: 'The Convenors' Meeting'!
Response from those who got it correct: 'Yeah!'
Response from those who got it wrong: 'Boo …'
Yes, to many lawyers, the
Annual Bench & Bar Games is the most sacred event on their sporting/social
calendar. To celebrate Singapore's hosting of the event this year from 28 to
30 April 2007, the Sports Committee teamed up with the Social and Welfare Committee
to organise this special edition of ?Quiz Night.
More than 100 sports (and party) enthusiasts packed the second level of The Penny Black, all jostling for a shot at winning the coveted Penny Black Law Society Quiz Night Champion's Mug, and of course, the prizes (the winning team walked away with a $50 Penny Black voucher and a bottle of champagne - which they promptly consumed on the spot). There were teams from the law firms, as well as many new faces from the various sports teams.
Mirroring the tradition
of the Bench & Bar Games, the highlight of the evening was the 'Mini Boat
Race' where each team had to send a male and female representative to take on
the challenge to be the fastest beer-drinking pair. The team from Clifford Law
took the early lead when their female representative was first among the ladies
to finish her half-pint. Held in a relay format, the burden was then on the
male representatives to finish their full-pint of beer ahead of all others.
The pairing from Drew & Napier LLC came from behind and managed to clinch
victory ahead of the other pairings. Their prize: two additional jugs of beer!
Writer's note: Word has it that the said female representative from the Clifford Law team and the male representative from the Drew & Napier team have both been talent-spotted and invited to join our prestigious Boat Race Team for the Bench & Bar Games.
The final score: the team from Hin Tat Augustine & Partners took fourth place, just one point behind the team from Tan Kok Quan Partnership who came in third. The combined team of Clifford Law/Tennis came in second and the combined team of Straits Law/Veterans Soccer/Golf were crowned the Champions.
The organising committee
would like to thank all teams for participating in the Quiz Night, and we look
forward to seeing everyone again (and hopefully more new teams/faces) at the
next Quiz Night scheduled to be held in July.
Writer's note: Special thanks must be given to the multi-firm team (consisting of foreign lawyers from various local law firms) for adding spice and flavour to this Quiz Night. They called themselves: 'Ignorantia ludus non excusat' which means: 'ignorance of sports is not an excuse'. Indeed, ignorance of sports was not cited as an excuse for not winning the Quiz Night, and certainly no prizes for guessing which position they ?came in!
