11th Charity Golf Tournament 2008
The Law Society's 11th Charity Golf Tournament was held on Sunday, 5 October 2008 at the Tampines Course, Tanah Merah Country Club. The Guest-of-Honour for the event was Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs, Mr K Shanmugam.
As always, the Deputy Prime Minister and Co-ordinating Minister for National Security, Professor S Jayakumar, gave his whole-hearted support to this event. In garnering 16 VIP flights at $8,000 each, he single-handedly helped to secure $128,000 in funding. Our Guest-of-Honour as well as The Honourable The Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong both graced the event with their presence at the after-event luncheon.
Great weather prevailing, 113 participants played their hearts out for a worthy cause. The format of play was system 36 stableford competition. There were three enticing hole-in-one prizes: Daimler offered a Mercedes Benz E200, Mission Hills Golf Club offered a four-day-three-night stay for two persons and ASM Golf offered a flight for three golfers at the Asian Seniors Master Tournament. Unfortunately, there were no winners of these fabulous prizes.
The best three players of the Tournament were:
This year's Tournament raised a net sum of $166,725, a 32 per cent increase
over last year's sum of $126,298. This sum will go towards the Criminal Legal
Aid Scheme ('CLAS'), now in its 23rd year, and which has to date, helped more
than 2,770 needy persons gain access to justice.
The success of the Tournament would not have been possible without the generous support of donors, sponsors and volunteer CLAS lawyers. The Organising Committee, chaired by Mr Gopinath Pillai, thanks all law practices, associates, friends, main sponsors Daimler South East Asia Pte Ltd and the Totalisator Board; and all other sponsors for their invaluable contributions.
